STOCK SALES AT MORRINSVILLE

An e r resent at i v e meeting of farmers was held in tlio Council Chambers, Morrinsville, on Saturday evening in response to n circular issuod by Messrs A . Hell, C. Manuel, Thomas White and others convenin'; u meeting for the purpose of discussing the ipiestioa of establishing monthly stock sales at Morrinsville. Amongst those present "ere ; Messrs H. .1. Clifford, Frank Marshall, Thou. Hinton, C. Manuel, Thos. White, .1. Trust, ,(. Homing, Alex Orr, P, Chapman, .). Davenport, E. Floyd, Hobson, Melvill, l ickett, F. Irwin, .lames Dignan, Gordon, Dignan, Thos. Heath, Turnbull, Hewitt, Cameron, Walkor, Hick, Ganloy, Mclnnis, Noils, Frost, Allen and others. Mr Thomas Hinton was unanimously voted to the chair. The chairman briefly introduced Mr Manuel (one of the conveners) and called upon him to state the purpose for which the meeting was called. Mr Manuel stated that ho, with other farmers, had arrived at the conclusion that it was very necessary, and in fact, imperative that stock salos should he established monthly at Morrinsville, i.o. if the district farmers wished to keep pace with the growing demands of this part of the Piako district, Morrinsville was an important centre, the junction of a large railway system connecting Auckland with Rotorua on the south, and with Te Aroba, Paeroa and Waihi on the north-east. That it was the centre of a large dairying, sheep-farm-ing and fattening district. That during the last two years a large influx of farmers, principally from the South, had come into the district, and many more were expected. It therefore behoved all (old residents and newcomers) to conserve their interests by co-opera-tion, and combine together for the public and private welfare of this favoured centre. Those present held farms, such as few in this favoured colony possessed. They must inaugurate a systematic plan of advancement. Cooperation alone is the bridge that will carry to success, and in this connection ho was of opinion that one of the first questions for their consideration was the establishment of regular cattle and stock sales in the district. Newer settlements than was Morrinsville had already taken the initiative in this direction; but he could tell them, speaking personally and for his colleagues, they were not going to allow any outsiders to usurp their functions or grasp and wrest business out of the hands of those to whom it legitimately belonged. It was resolved that Mr Erost (of Messrs Frost and Rowe) be appointed hon. secretary. It was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Mr J. Dignan, seconded by Mr Mclnnis, that a monthly stock sale be hold in Morrinsville.

Alessrs J. Fleming, T. White, A. Orr, Hewitt, T. Heath, Dr. Seville and others addressed the meeting, all of whom were emphatic in declaring the absolute necessity for monthly sales being hold. On the motion of Air Manuel, seconded by Mr Cameron, the secretary was instructed to write to Messrs McNicol and Co., auctioneers, Hamilton, asking them if they would be prepared to hold monthly stock sales at Blorrinsville, and stating that it had been resolved at a public meeting of farmers that a monthly sale shall be held there. It was also resolved that upon receiving Alessrs McNicol and Co.’s reply tho secretary be empowered to convene a meeting to be held in the Council Chambers at such time as ho shall consider expedient to receive and discuss Alessrs McNicol and Co.’s reply. The following gentlemen were elected a committee to consult with the secretary and arrange any details in connection with the proposition, viz., Alessrs A. Orr, T. Heath, P. Chapman, P. Alarshall, C. Manuel, T. White and J. Fleming.—(Own Correspondent).
