ALLEGED FORGERY OF A CHEQUE Auckland. Last Night. A smart-looking young man named Frank Livingstone. alia3 Johuton, was charged before Mr Kettle, S.M.. to-day wi l h forging and uttering a cheque upon the National Bank on March 30th at Kaukap .kapa. Chief Detective Grace prosecuted. Michael Walsh, a Kaukap-kaka settler, sa ; d he gave Livingstone a £3 cheque for working oq his farm, and recognised one cished at a neighbouring store by the accused as the p-irtieular oie, though it b:'d been altered to £l3. The fact that the cheque had been cashed for £l3 at the store but returned to the storekeeper by the bank as irregular, was proved by Henry Dye, a storeman. Livingstone heard the evidence without comment, asked no questions, and pleaded not guilty. He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, FIRE. CHRtSTCHURCH, Last Night. A fire in the drapery shop of the Coiuolidated Supply Company, Oxford Terrace, last evening destroyed a portion of ihe building and stock valued Ht £250 to £3OO. The stock was insured in the Phoenix Office for £SOO. The property belonged to MrGowing, who had an insurance, battheamount is. not at present ascertainable. BOLLESTON MEMORIAL. Temuka, Last Night. '.. lie Hawke's Bay Trades Council 1-st. night pissed a resolution strongly protesting against the operations of the millers' trust, calling upon the Government to pass legislation controlling the operations of trusts, and asking them to take steps towards establishing a State flour mill. ESCAPE OF PRISONERS Wellington, Last Night. In connection with the escape of two prisoners from the Terrace gaol, one wardar has been fined for not reporting the disaupearaueo of prison tools used by the escapees, and the services of an acting-warder have been dispensed with. SCHOOL INSPECTOR APPOINTMENT. Mr T. S. Foster, at present head master of the West Christchurch School, was this morning appointed school inspector for North Canterbury district, in place of Mr L. B. Wood resigned.
