Mr Chamberlain telegraphed to Mr Tuff the Unionist winner at the Rochester by-election, 'Your great viotoiy will strengthen the Govern ment and give the free importers » much-needed lesson.' Mr Chamberlain, writing to the British Australian, hoped his resignation would conduce to the earlier success of his policy, which he believed was quite necessary in the interest of tbo Motherland and the colonies. ' Together wo can hold our own against all-comers; separate we are all insignificant factors in the world.
