THE NEWTOWN PETITION. (BV TELKQRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, This Day. In connection with the Newtown licensing enquiry Messrs Bell and Atkinson to-day applied to the Supreme Court for a writ of prohibition to prevent the S. M. disallowing certain vote* at the poll, on the grouud that the Magistrate had no jurisdiction, aud the scrutiny of certain votes as proposed would destroy the secrecy of the ballot. The Chief Justice aud Judge Edwards are hearing the application as one of urgency. The application for a writ to prvvent a scrutiny of the votes at the Newtown local option poll was argued in the Supreme Couit yesterday. Judgment was reserved.
