CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING-. A special meeting of this Council was held last evening at 7.30 p.m., for the purpose of confirming the special order making the waterworks by-law. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr Buckland), Crs. Boyce, Davies, Escott, Ferguson, Clark, Richardson, Roberts and W'elis. Water Supply.—There wa3 some little discussion as to the rates to be charged for the water, which were thoroughly ex pWined by the Mayor ; after which the resolution making the special order was duly confirmed, and the common seal ot the corporation was ordered to be attached to the by-law.—lt was resolved to have the by-law piinted, and applicants can have copies of it for Gd eacii.— The Mayor said the pipes might be expected in Auckland any day, and he suggested that the man who would be their engineer and turn-cock should be appointed as soon as the pipes arrived ; and while they were being laid he could act as clerk of works, then he would be thoroughly conversant with all the ramifications of the service.—The suggestion was adopted, and this matter, together with the licensing of plumbers, etc., were relegated to the Waterworks Committee, with power to act. ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting was then held ; the same members being present. Septic Tanks.—Replying to an application from the Stnitary Inspector on this subject, Dr. Makgill, the District Health Officer of AuckUnd, sent a very lengthy explanatory letter (four sheets of foolscap, closely written), giving every information, and also a plan of what he deemed necessary for a house of moderate size.—The Mayor said few Government officials would have gone to the trouble Dr. Makuill had taken in the matter, and he was evidently determined to have the best sanitary arrangements made, if possible.—This letter had been handed to Mr Wm. Earl, who is just about to erect a large residence near the Cambridge Domain, and he wrote stating he was afraid erecting septic tanks would be rather too expensive ; but he was willing to spend a sum of £ls upon providing drainage for the house he was about to erect, and asking what form would meet with the Council's approval. —lt was resolved to reply that the Couucil would be pleased if Mr Earl would adopt septic tanks ; but any other equally effective method would meet with its approval. The Deijveey ok Telegrams.—The Chief Postmaster at Auckland wrote stating that the Postmaster at Cambridge would define on the Borough plan the radius over which telegrams were delivered.—The plan had been handed to the Postmaster, and he had made some marks upon it, but had not defined the parts over which telegrams are delivered free of charge, so it was decided to return the plan to him and ask him to cleat ly define upon it the area over which telegrams are delivered. Road-making Machine.—The Piako County Couucil wrote stating their roadmaking midline would shortly be in the neighbourhood of Cambridge, when Foreman Mahood would communicate with the Borouih Council and do any work they might require.—lt was resolved to thank the Piako County Council, and when the machine arrives the works committee will direct what streets*shail be operated upon. The Waikato Bridge.—Attention was drawn to the state of this bridge, the Rotoraugi cattle having to go to Ohaupo to be sold instead of Cambridge owing to its insecure state.—A cable will shortly be received from England stating what a suspension bridge can be erected for, then some decisive steps may be taken.
