DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.

At a quarter-past II o’clock last evening Mrs John Knox, a very old resident of Hamilton, passed peacefully away. The deceased lady was a native of Memel, in Prussia. She came out direct to Hamilton in August, 1870, to join her brother (who was at that time engaged in farming pursuits on the farm now known as Knox’s on the Ohaupo Road), and was married in December of the same year. The deceased, who was 00 years of age, has been an invalid for a considerable time. Premonitions of paralysis made themselves known during last year, and about three months ago the first stroke occurred. The second attack took place just three weeks ago to-day. ami since that time the deceased lady has been hovering between life and death, During the whole of this time she was conscious, and took a keen interest in passing events, more especially those connected with the war, and just a few hours before her death enquired if news had yet been received of the relief of Matching. The late Mrs Knox was of a most retiring disposition, and notwithstanding that she lias lived so long here and that her husband Ins taken such a leading part in the public affairs of the town, few', even of the older residents, could claim her acquaintance. The iutermeiH, which will bo private, will take place at the Hamilton West Cemetery to-morrow (Thursday). Deceased leaves a husband, a sou, ami a daughter (Mrs C. Munro) to mourn their loss, and to them we extend our deepest sympathy.
