THE MISSING WAIKATO.
The barque Aalborg has arrived at Lyttelton. She spoke the Waikato on August 3 in latitude 39' 12 south and longitude 39*18 east. The shaft broke on June 5 in latitude 37*30 south and longitude 20'0 east. The barque sailed within hailing distance. In reply to a question as to whether the people wanted taking off, the captain replied in the negative. The chief officer of the Waikato boarded the barque and asked if the barque would take the Waikato in tow. Capt. Clansen explained that he could not do so. The barque supplied the vessel with biscuits, the only stores they were short of. [VI TEXiaRAFH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Christcuurch, Last Night. Amongst the letters brought by the Aalborg, was one from Captain Weston, of the s.s. Waikato, dated 2nd August, which states that the a.s. Waikato was steaming against a head sea when the tail end of the shaft broke. It was found that the fracture was too far aft to be repaired, even if it were possible to tip the ship, which would have been risky. Jury masts were rigged and they set all the sail available ; but the vessel was unmanageable and drifted into the Agulhas current. The barque Tacora was sighted on July 28th. The master deoided to make an effort to tow the Waikato and a line was got aboard. A certain amount of towing was done, the next day the line broke. A second effort was made to tow the steamer but the wiud died away and the vessels began to drift together. Ultimately the Tacora collided with the steamer the latter entering the stern of the barque, receiving very slight injury herself. The barque then proceeded on her voyage without making any further attempt. Capt. Wcstou reports that after the Waikato broke down she drifted eastward between lat. 36 and 40 deg. The men were behaving splendidly. When the letter left all were in fairly good spirits.
