WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of the above I Board was held at the Council Chambers?, Hamilton, on Thursday morning last. Thero were present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Dey, chairman), and Messrs W. V. Chepmoll, E. Allen, S Steele, A. J. Fanner, R. J. McGuirk, P. J. Vickers, W. H. Thomas, A. Primrose, A. Bach, J. B. Teasdale, A. Furze, and V. I. Hunt. Donations.—Mr Thos. Walter, of The Lake, Hamilton, wrote, enclosing a donation of £5 5s to the institution. He said he understood that Dr. Kenny wished to obtain some hooks for the use of the patients, and suggested that a portion of the money might be devoted to this purpose.—Mr T. M. Hall, of the Ohaupo Road, also forwarded a donation of £1 Is.—Votes of thanks were passed to the donors. Endowments.—Mr F. W. Lang wrote, notifying the Board that he had interviewed the Minister for Lauds with reference to the setting aside of hospital endowments in the King Country, and had been informed that the Government never made endowments, a 3 it was contrary to law, and that no endowments had been made for many years. Railway Fares,—Mr Lang also stated that he had brought the question of cheap railway fares for patients wishina to visit Rotorua, before the Minister for Railways, who expressed his sorrow at not being able to comply with the request. Mr Cadman expressed the opinion that it was more a matter for the Charitable Add Board to deal with than the Railway Department. Probationer Nurse.—Miss E. M. Cogswell, of Te Mata, applied for appointment as probationer nurse.—The Chairman said there was-uo vacausy just now, but the application would be considered when a vacancy occurred.— Several members spoke in favour of the applicant being appointed. Water Supply.—Mr Slado reported that he had inspected the well at the hospital, and found that the inperfection in the water supply, was due to the choking of the pipes that carried the overflow from the well, through the growth of a tree. This obstruction had now been removed. He advised that a rough filter Bhould be put in ; this would necessitate the erection of a tank immediately over the present tanks.—The Board con- , sidered the suggested alteration a necessary one, and the House Committee was empowered to have the work carried out.—[Mr N. T. Hunt here took his seat]. Tenders.—Two tenders were received for Lot 266, Te Awamutu, 36 acres, viz. J. B. Teasdale, £9 ; and T. K. Davidson, £B. Mr Teasdale, who is a member of the Board, said although he did not wish to vote on the matter, he would like to make a few remarks. In the course of these he said that he had tendered solely in the interests of the Board, as he thought these endowments should bring something like a fair rental. In the present instance the land had deteriorated greatly during the occupancy of Mr Davidson.—At this stage a letter was read from Mr Davidson offering £l2 a year for the land, provided he was allowed to crop it and give it up at any time.—Air McGuirk proposed that the highest tender should be accepted.—Mr | Thomas seconded.—Mr Allen moved, as an amendment, that Mr Davidson's tender should be accepted. —Mr Steele, in seconding the amendment, said he did not think it right thatMr Teasdale should speak upon the matter and influence the meeting. It was likely to create a scandal.—The Chairman thought there should be no feeling in the matter at all. It was the duty of the Board to accept the highest tender, and he thought the thanks ot the Board were due to Mr Teasdale for causing Biich an advance in the rent of the land,—On being put the amendment was only supported by the mover and seconder, all the other members, with the exception of Mr Teasdale, voting against it. The voting on the motion was vice versa.—Mr Bach said in order to clear Mr Teasdale, who he felt sure Mas acting straightforwardly in the matter, he thought some of the members living in the district should be requested to inspect the land and report upon its state at next meeting.—Messrs McGuirk and Vickers were accordingly asked ' to report upon the condition of the land. Bib-laws. —In accordance with his notice of motion 1 given at last meeting, Mr Furze moved that the alterations and additions in the bye-laws referring to the appointment and instruction of nurses should be enforced, rnd that the byelaws come into operation on the Ist August next.—Mr Teasdale seconded.— Mr Thomas thought the matter should be left over for another month, as the new members had not had an opportunity of looking through the bye-laws. —Mr Chepirell pointed out that several of the bye-laws clashed, and said he thought the House Committee should go into the whole position of the bye-laws. It was, he considered, simply absurd to try to make bye-laws without first consulting the responsible officers of the institution who were directly affected by them. He moved that a committee consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Primrose, Bach, Chepmell and Allen should be appointed to go through them. —Thiß was seconded by Mr Steele.—Mr Furze then withdrew his proposal aud the amendment became the substantive motion and was carried. RELIEF.—Mr Farmer reported that he had granted temporary relief to Mr Jones, of Te Aroha, who was crippled by rheumatics.—The Board agreed to grant 7s per week, and to refund to Mr Farmer the amount he had already advanced. FiKErLACE. —Dr. Kenny applied for a fireplace in what is known as the "solitary ward," in order that the temperature might be kept at an even rate.—The Chairman said that some time ago a committee appointed for the purpose had inspected this ward with a view to putting in a fireplace or some heating apparatus. It had come to the conclusion that it was impossible to warm the room without increasing the insurance about 20 per cent., and the report was unfavourable. However, the House Committee was asked to again inspect the building and report at next meeting.
