HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
When an article of furniture to be polished is very much soiled, wash thoroughly with warm; soapy water, drying as quickly as possible, then, with a flannel rag dipped in a mixture of 2 parts of linseed to one of kerosine, rub the surface very hard. Let it stand while you are rubbing another piece, and then, with a perfectly clean piece of flannel polish well. To remove the smell of paint slice a ‘ few onions and put them in a pail of water in the centre of the room and leave it there for several hours ; or put a large handful of bay into a pail full of water and let it stand in the room over night. Iron rust and mildew may be bleached by rubbing on the spot lemon juice and salt, and exposing the article to a hot sun. Fruit stains may he removed with chloride of lime, but should it fail, oxalic acid will be effectual, cave must be taken not to allow it to touch the fingers. Wash the fabric well afterwards. To keep salt during damp weather, or whenever table salt is given to caking in its receptacles, put into each of the latter, a pinch of ground arrowroot, and the salt will remain perfectly dry and fine, whatever the temperature may be. To remove tea stains from Damask ; These may be taken out, even after a long time, by the application of glycerine. Take some of the best quality of glycerine and rub the stained parts with it. Afterwards wash them over carefully in the ordinary way.
