THE GALE AND FLOODS.

The heavy gale and rain which prevailed on Wednesday night and Thursday morning did little damage in the Waikato district beyond the uprooting of a few trees. From Auckland intelligence reaches us that the gale was the worst experienced for some years, and that several vessels in the harbour drifted, some of which were damaged by collision and some sank. The whole country around Paeroa was under water, and the lower township was flooded. There is a wash out on the railway about half a mile outside Paeroa which will prevent the running of trains for a few days. It has beeu the bi/rgest flood known there for some years. On the Te Aroha road the water was five feet deep' and several families were removed in boats. . It is impossible to get from Paeroa to Karangahake, owing to the state of intervening creeks. Yesterday morning the water had receded from the lower tovvnship. The Waitekauri, Komata, Puriri and Hikutaia bridges are reported as being washed away." '
