' o Librae! Entertainment.—An entertainment in aid of our public library was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening last. The, attendance was not very large, owing, no doubt, to the cold,, rainy night. However, several were present who reside a long distance off, being determined not to miss an'entertainmentof which Mr Vause had. the management, as they were: certain of a good evening's enjoyment, and which, without a doubt, they had. The Town Band,- under Bandmaster Bain, kindly offered their services gratis, and played a. few very pleasing selections previous tothe'opening of the affair. It gives one* pleasure to report that amongst the audience were to be noticed two old and! much-respected veterans of the Crimean, and Indian campaigns, namely, Sergt.Major Carley, who/,was in active service at the Crimea, and Mr John Rees, who was present at the : relief of Lucknow. Both these old veterans reside in onr ■. township, and, although well advanced in years, still have the good old military appearance, and further, would still b& able to serve under old England's flag, .if necessary. Mr Vause presided, and an- • nounced the various items. The programme, which was a lengthy one, consisted of the following items :—Overture-,' "Honest Toil," by the local stringed! orchestra (piano, Miss Mitchell j violins. Messrs Archer, Bowden, Vause and Mr Bain ; 'cello, Mr E. Wall); comic duet, " Grandad's Farm," Messrs Dawson and Vause ; violin solo (selected), Miss Daisy Bowden; song, " The Good Old Days," Mr James L. Mandeno ; Messrs Vause: Bros., phonograph selections, (a) " AnviL Chorus'-*,from II Trovatore, by the Col-: umbia Orchestra ; (b) song, " The .Convivial Man," as sung by D. Quinn ■; character song, " The Dashing White Sergeant, Miss Allan; diorarnie display of beautiful realistic pictures, illustrating the life and reign of Her Majesty the Queen, scenes and events in Her Majesty's childhood, youth and Record Reign, her birthplace, homes and palaces; etc. The British army, thrilling battle scenes, our soldiers in action, heroes of the Victoria Cross earning the ' coveted honour. Recitation, " Charge of the Light Brigade." Mr King, while the scene of the charge was on the sheet. Britannia's Bulwarks, our Navy, the old and the new, the British fleet, types and development of our warships from Trafalgar to the present day, were also shown. Mr Bathurst sang " The Death of Nelson" as a picture of the Victory was thrown on to the sheet. The second portion of the programme, in addition to Phonograph selections and dioramic displays, was as follows :—Quartette, "Tommy Atkins,'" Misses Allan and Hall and Messrs Dawson and Aubin ; songj "The MilitaryGirl," Mr Bathurst ; comic duet in character, " 1 Don't Want To Play In Your Yard." Messrb Dawsou and Vause. A nail driving competition for ladies took place. Only two young ladies entered, and Mr Dawson acted as judge; The prize was for the three quickest and best driven nails, which the judge awarded toMissL. Matidcuo (pair silk gloves], Miss Molly Hall was the other competi- *- tor, and ran her opponent very close. Industrial Exhibition.—Mr Vause,, Chairman of the Library Committee*: has received a reply from His ExcellencyLord Ranfurly, in which he notifies that ihe has much pleasure in becoming Patronof the Waikato West Industrial Exhibition, to be held early in October next,, under the auspices of the Library Committee.—(Own Correspondent).
