THE WAIKATO LICENSING ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l notice in your issue of Tuesday a communication signed " Perplexed,'' but as it is so palpably inconsistent in its statements and so absurdly at variance with my well-known principles, I will merely leave the letter to the contemplation of your readers. Whatever shade of opinion held upon the problems and topics of the day, if those opinions are held with consistency and thorough conviction, they should at least be viewed with toleration, if cot respect, for all minds arc not cast in the same mould. For 25 yc-irs pasi I have always avoided extreme views upon the question of temperance, and I may say that in my estimation many of the tactics of the prohibitionists are calculated to defeat the end in view. As 1 acted as Deputy Returning Officer at the last election, and should, if guilty of one of the charges of " Perplexed," have directly violated the oaths of office, I must request you to furnish me with his name, as I think that an apology at least is due for so gross a misstatement.—l am, etc., Thomas H. White.
