SERIOUS ASSAULT GASES.
A telegram from Thames states : A settler at Omahu, named Arthur Lines, was admitted to the Hospital about one o'clock on Tuesday morning iu an unconscious condition, caused, it is alleged, through having been struck heavily on the left temple with an Indian club by a young man Darned Frederick Lough. The circumstances which led up to the assault are as follow :—For some time past, it is said, there has been considerable friction between Lough, who is master of the Omahu Public School, and his committee, and on Monday evening a meeting of the settlers, convened by Lines, was held to consider the conduct of the school, and Lough was present by request. After the meeting was over an altercation took place between the two men mentioned, which eventually led up to a scuttle, when Innes either threw or knocked Lough down upon some Indian clubs. When the latter got on his feet again he seized one of the Indian clubs, and struck limes heavily on the head with it, knocking him insensible. Efforts were at once made to restore Innes to consciousness, but as these proved futile, he was brought into the Hospital, where he has remained unconscious ever since, and is considered to be in a serious condition. The matter was reported to the police, who at once took steps for the arrest of Lough, and at the Policj Court, on Tuesday, he was charged with having wounded Innes, thereby doing him grievous bodily harm. Cpon the applicati on of .Sergeant Gillies, the accused was remanded until Friday next, bail being allowed, himself in one surety of JJoU and two sureties of £SO each. fa
