PRESENTATION TO MR J. E. ELLIOTT
At the breaking up of the Aratapu School on Friday the children presented Mr J. E. Elliott, second assistant, with a valuable gold chain as a farewell token of their regard. The following letter accompanied the gift. — "Aratapu, Deer. 23rd 1.392. To Mr J. E, Elliot. Dear Sir and Friend, We, the children of the Aratapu Public School wish you success and joy in your now life. But we are unwilling to part with so earnest and constant a teacher without giving soma tangible expression of our regard for you. Eor the last four years you were ready cheerfully and efficiently to do all you could for us, often unobtrusively but always gladly. We shall miss your cheery face and voice, and warmly hope that as you have been so helpful to us so in your new life you may be foremost both in teaching and leading in every good word and work. Further we proffer the accompanying gold chain as a. token of onr grateful regard fervently wishing you health long life and prosperity. We are on behalf of the children, Yours respectfully,—Henry Phelan, Bessie Scott, Willie Smith, Millie Wilson, John Haswell, Emma Harrison, George Leiidruui, Hannah Smith, Carrie Bazzell.” Mr Elliott has served the whole of his pupil teachership in the Aratapu school, and has spent four years in the district. His duties as teacher have been diligently and faithfully performed and at the same time his own studies have bee i well attended to. He successfully passed through his examinations at the close of each year of service, and at the last Teachers’ Examinations secured a pass in Class E. Xu the Band of Hope and Mutual Improvement Societies Mr Elliott was a good and willingly worker; in the former he held the position of Vice-Prerident. In him, too, the Cricket Club loses a most useful help in both the bowling and batting departments, as tvell as in the management, for his enthusiasm in the game kept others at it. As a footballer also he was of very great assistance to Aratapu in the matches of last season, and he was one of Wairca s representatives in the game against Auckland. In many other ways our friend wid be missed for he was of a most active and genial spirit. He left on Friday last for his holidays and several of the children gathered on the wharf to give him a good semi off. After the holidays ha takes charge of two half-time schools in the Okaihau district and we o-ladly wish him every comfort a ml prosperity in his new sphere. May lus career in the more responsible position of head or sole teacher of schools be thoroughly successful is our earnest wish.
