CRICKET.

The fifth inter-provincial cricket match between Otago and Auckland began yesterday on the Auckland Domain ground and is being continued today. Although this is the fifth match between the provinces it is the first time that an Otago eleven has visited Auckland. Hitherto Auckland has always been successful against this southern province but on this occasion the issue is more doubtful. The Otago men have had an English coach and have made good progress under his tuition. Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay have both been defeated by Otago. Auckland is somewhat handicapped i>3 r the absence of some of her best cricketers, so that her team is not strong in batting, though she has a good array of bo ivlers. The Otago bowling- against Hawke’s Bay was very good. In a cricket match near Newcastle, N.S. W., recently, the middle stump was knocked out of the ground without disturbing the bails. ‘Not out,’ said the umpire. Inspection showed that the hails (a new set) were glued together, and had been placed on the wicket in that state. In a senior cup match at Christchurch between the Addington and Lancaster Park teams, the first six wickets for the former fell for 1 run, a leg bye The other four wickets put on 44 runs. Wilding captured 5 wickets for 19 runs, and De Mans 3 for 4 runs. The Port Albert C.C are, our correspondent hears, about to send a challenge to play the Tatararilii Club at Albert]and, as it is understood that the latter Club is willing- to make the journey. They hope that the Aratapu C.C. will follow in due course.

Cn Saturday, 17th instant, the Port Albert Mutual Improvement Society met a team of Outsiders, and after a pleasant game scored a win by 57 runs. The following- are the scores;—
