AUCKLAND, December 23. shoplifting for a period of six months was indulged in by this woman,” said Detective-Sergeant 'McHugh in the Police Court, when Maude O’Halloran, married, aged 53 (Mr. Robinson) pleaded guilty to 13 charges of theft. Property valued at £77 was stolen from six different shops in the city between July 1 and December 20, the amounts ranging from 5s lid to £23 13s Bd. All the property was recovered from the accused’s home after her arrest on Monday, said DetectiveSergeant McHugh. It was hard to understand the woman’s lapse. He added that she had never previously been in trouble. i I ' ‘ 1 ' Mr. Hunt, S.M.: “The husband must have known his money could not buy 1 all the things that were stolen.” Mr. Robinson said the husband and children knew nothing of her offences but the husband was prepared to make whatever restitution was required. Her theftf included 10 handbags, suggesting that no thought was given to what was taken. The Magistrate: “She might have used some of them for» Christmas presents. I think the state should look after her for a while.” The accused was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment. Restitution of £3 was ordered. -(PA.) '
