CHRISTMAS TRAGEDY.
DEATH OF AW AMERICAN AIRMAN. PARACHUTING TO CHILDREN’S PARTY. SWEPT OUT TO SEA DROWNED. (Received Thursday, 8.25 p.m.) BOSTON, December 22. An Air Corps' sergeant, dressed as Santa Claus, parachuting to the scene of a children’s Christmas party at an Army post, was -swept out to sea and, after a frantic three-hour search by aeroplanes, his body found on a nearby beach. He had divested himself of his parachute, but the weight of his equipment apparently resulted in his drowning. Hia wife and child witnessed the accident, which brought in its train two other accidents, one resulting in severe injury to another officer when, in the tumult of organising a rescue, he was cut by the propeller of a bombing ’plane. The other accident involved the rescue of two men from drowning when a dinghy capsized as they were attempting to row to the aid of the sergeant who w T as swept out to sea. .
