AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

ACTIVITIES OF MASTERTON t CLUB. VISIT TO PETONE LAST WEEK. On account of the weather, the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club was again unfortunate in having to postpone its weekly evening run last week. However, this delay has given the late beginners an extra week in which to train, and therefore this week’s run should prove all the more interesting. The programme as previously set down will be the list of events for to-mor-row, and is to commence at 6 p.m. Still more new members have been seen on the track during the past two or three weeks, and amongst them there appears to be some good talent. The response reerivtyl as a result of the appeal last week for lady members of the club is very pleasing. Several ladies have shown an interest, and it is hoped to be able to include ladies’ .events in this week’s programme. The club has been very fortunate to receive amongst its membership such a fine runner as Miss Greagor, late of the West Coast, North Island. Miss Grea- ■ gor needs no introduction to the athletic minded community of .this district, as she has competed with a fair measure of success at New Zealand championships in recent years. her help, it is hoped to be able to build up a strong ladies’ section, capable of holding its own with other clubs throughout, the province. During the week-end, several members of the chib journeyed to Petone and. competed at the Laykold Cup meeting, but owing to severe handicapping, did not secure many honours. However, the experience will undoubtedly prove beneficial to- those who were having their first outing in open company.

In winning the 100 yards off a handicap of 2 yard®, C. Hausmann proved himself equal to, if not better than the Wellington cracks, so convincing was his win. In the writer’s opinion, Hausmann did: not run to the form he has shown recently on his home track, and this makes his win all the more meritorious. e t i A. B. Cunningham, having his first start in open company, was overcome with nervousness, and once he rids himself of this obstacle will meet with bet-. ter results. For one who has had previous experience, Branigan was slightly disappointing. This was probably due to lack of competition, and the future will no doubt see him do much better. Wickens, also having his first outing, ran very impressively. Several prominent Petone officials remarked: favourably upon his style. The handicapper had treated him too severely, and although he did not get placed, his form suggests that before long he will be experiencing ,the thrill of, being first to breast the tape. Kirwan ran in the 440 yards and BSO yards, and although the car ride over the hill did not agree with him, his run in the half-mile was very pleasing. A little more trailing for this event will soon bring him into prominence. To run a close fourth off 15 yards iu 51 I-ssees. in the 440 yards is quite a creditable performance, especially for one having his first race for a couple of seasons. This was achieved: by B. McPherson, and the result raises the hopes of his admirers, who will be pleased to see him regain the form he has shown in the past. The team was in the capable hands of Mr. W. Grantham, whose services were much aunreciated. . Mention must be made of the hospitality extended to the team by the officials of the Petone Club. No stone was left unturned to make the visit enjoyable, and the sincere thanks of the club are due to them.
