LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A W.E.A. lecture will be given in the Lecture Room, Municipal Buildings, this evening at 7.45 o'clock byMr. P, Martin-Smith, M.A. LL.B., tutor-organiser. His subject will be “'Social Change—Democracy and Representative Government.''
A 50-mile cycling road race to discover the Wellington provincial champion was held on Saturday and resulted in a win for J. Foote, who off scratch took two hours 17 minutes, which was also the fastest time. I. Caulton (4min.) won the handicap event.—(P.A.)
In a professional boxing match at Christchurch on Saturday evening, Colin Craig, Timaru, was beaten on points by Jacky Sharp, Australia. The weights were not announced, but Sharp appeared to have the advantage.— (P-A.)
At about 7.45 on Saturday evening a collision between a small sports car and a big saloon occurred at the corner of Chapel Street and Hall Street. .Neither vehicle was moving at any great speed at the time. The small car appeared to be little damaged, but the front bumper of the saloon was broken.
The final meeting of Cabinet prior to the opening of the session has been called by the Prime Minister .(the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) for this morning, and it is possible that there will be sufficient business to keep Cabinet busy on Tuesday also A caucus of Government members has been called for Wednesday, when general policy will be fully discussed. Mr. Savage stated in Wellington on Saturday that it was the Government’s intention to follow the procedure adopted last year and broadcast the opening of Parliament on Thursday by his Excellency the Governor-General Viscount Galway. The House will settle down to serious business on the Tuesday, when it may be necessary to take supply. On Wednesday the Address-in-Eeply debate will be opened.
A small saloon rental ear was damaged beyond repair and its four young occupants were seriously injured when the vehicle crashed into a power pole .shortly after midnight in Three Kings Road, opposite Bewa Road, Mount Boskill, Auckland. The driver, Michael Kyne (28), of Parnell, and Miss Dorothy Davies (22), of Gisborne, are still in a serious condition. Douglas Peterson (23), Mount Eden, is out of danger ,and Joyce White (19), of Gis borne, is in a satisfactory condition. It is probable that the car skidded on the slippery concrete road and crashed into the power pole on the bend. The crash was heard by residents a considerable distance away. •They summoned a doctor, and two -ambulance? took the injured people to hospital. Alt four suffered head injuries and concussion.—(P.A.)
