DAVIS CUP.

NEW ZEALAND ELIMINATES CHINA. KHO SIN KIE BEATS STEDMAN. MALFROY WINS DECIDING SINGLE. (Received Sunday, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 1.

New Zealand eliminated China in the Davis Cup. C. E. Malfroy defeated Choy 6/1, 6/3, 6/1. Kho Sin Kie defeated A. C. Stedman 6/4, 6/4, 1/6, 6/3. Kho Sin Kie was too steady for Stedman, who in the first set repeatedly double-faulted and netted. Stedman' led 2/0 in the second set, but the Chinese, despite the New Zealand’s strenuous efforts, obtained an unshakeable lead. Stedman outclassed Kho Sin Kie in the third set with beautiful passing shots, but tired in the fourth. Nevertheless he won three games in a row for a 3/2 lead, after which the Chinese, employing stop volleys, ran out the winner. The deciding match was merely a procession. Choy played valiantly, but was completely outclassed. In the doubles, A. C. Stedman and Cl E. Malfroy (New Zealand) beat Kho Sin Kie and Tsui Wai Pui (China), 6/3, 6/8, 6/3, 6/2. Kie’s brilliance did not compensate for the weakness of his partner, who was outclassed, despite a vigorous service with which he scored an occasional ace. The New Zealanders continued to pound their weaker opponent. The Chinese fought strongly in the second set, levelling the score at 5/5 from 3/5. New Zealand drew ahead 6/5, but lost the next two games owing to Malfroy becoming erratic. Volleying by the Chinese clinched the set. The New Zealanders rallied in the third set, and broke through Pui’s service for a lead, which was steadily increased. They continued to force the pace, catching .their opponents out of position. Malfroy's smashes were conspicuous.

CONTEST IN MEXICO. AUSTRALIANS WIN OPENING MATCHES'. MEXICO CITY, April 30, In the Davis Cup first round contest between Australia and Mexico, A. K. Quist (Australia) beat Reyes (Mexico), 6/3, 6/1, 6/3. V. B. McGrath (Australia) beat Tapia (Mexico), 6/2, 6/4, 6/4.

Reyes, who has an exceptionally weak service, was resolute, but was unequal to Quist, who, in the first set, had a 5-0 lead before the Mexican rallied and fought back, winning the next three in an amazing spurt of speed and accurate placing. The Australian, who took the earlier games love or to 15, increased the pace, however, and clinched the set. He continued the pressure in the next set, in which, despite Reyes's determination and many deuces, the games only demonstrated further the disparity between the players. An influence which may eliminate Qnist was shown in. "the third set, when he tired and allowed the Mexican to amass a 3-2 lead. The Australian was listless and the play uninteresting, with only a few good rallies, both netting and outing. Quist was compelled to throw all his energy into the finish of the match and left the court drenched with perspiration. ,Reyes, who is an Indian, was fresh. HARD COURT TITLES.
