SHEARING INDUSTRY
SERIOUS CRISIS AVERTED. SUSPENSION OF THE HOURS CLAUSE. CHRISTCHURCH, November 28. The suspension of the hours clause in the shearers’ agreement last night averted a crisis threatening the wool industry which at one stage appeared likely to involve New Zealand 1 in a loss of a million pounds. The clause provides that work in sheds must cease at noon, on Saturdays. Because of the abnormally broken weather experienced, particularly in the North Islamd, the operation qf the clause had become impracticably. Shearing had been seriously checked and there was a grave danger of deterioration of wool.
The clause was suspended, by the authority of the Minister of Labour and with the consent of tne parties to the agreement, the New Zealand Sheep Owners’ Federation and the New Zealand Workers’ Union. —'(P.A.)
