WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MEETING AT ALFREDTON,

Mrs. G. Napier presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Alfredton Women’s Institute. The competition of spring flowers arranged in a quart preserving jar was won by Miss 8. Napier, with Mrs. G. Napier second and Miss B. Percy third. The other competition was a two-minute impromptu speech, which was won by Mrs. T. Smith, with Mrs. S. Baleigh second. It was decided to give £1 to the proceeds of the Blind Concert, to be held 1 in Eketahuna. Mrs. Fern gave a demonstration on rug-making. Members brought gifts to be sent to the lepers for Christmas. The hqstesses were Mesdames S. Baleigh, Harmond and Wallis. MAURICEVILLE. A very pleasant afternoon was spent on Tuesday, when the Mauriceville Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting. After the formal business was dealt with the East ladies were left in charge for the remainder of the meeting. It was decided to make a donation to the Health Camp. Mrs. H. Trass and Miss B. Mortensen were elected delegates to the Federation meeting at Pahiatua on October 29. Mrs. A. Forsberg, on behalf of the members, made a presentation to Mrs. J. B. MacLean, who has been secretary since the formation of the Institute. The competitions were judged by Mrs. McGovern and Mrs. Henderson of the BolwayManaia Institute and resulted as follow:—Best worked cushion, Miss J. Larsen 1, Mrs. G. Gregory 2. Cocoanut ice, Miss M. Larsen 1, Mrs. I. D. Cameron 2. Mystery sake, Miss N. Freeman. In the mystery bag competition seven ladies tied for first place. Much amusement was caused in character reading by Mrs. Kilgour of Masterton. A vote of thanks was passed to the visitors and a pleasant afternoon concluded with afternoon tea.
