STOCK EMBARGO.
CHAMBERS CONGRESS URGES REMOVAL. WELLINGTON, October 7. The Congress of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire in the afternoon proceeded to discuss a motion in regard to the embargo on the importation of stock. Sir Albert Atkey moved: 4 ’That in the interests of progressive trade with New Zealand the congress is of unanimous opinion that the Government of New Zealand be asked to reconsider and, if thought fit, remove the embargo forthwith.” After the motion was seconded the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, addressed the congress on the question. He said that he had no doubt the Government would take the necessary steps to have an investigation made and if the situation warranted it, he thought he could say definitely that the embargo would be removed. The Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, while in the Homeland would fully investigate the subject and had been supplied w’ith all available information by the Agriculture Department to that end. The motion was strongly opposed by Mr. Ross, Auckland, who said the farmers of New Zetland, by a large majority, were in favour of maintaining the restructions. The motion was put to the vote and passed unanimously.—(P.A.)
