LOVELOCK SECOND.
KANSAS STUDENT WINS MILE PRINCETON. J, VICTOR MAKES IMPRESSIVE SHOWING. CUNNINGHAM WELL BEATEN. (Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m.) PRINCETON, October 3. J. A. Lovelock failed in probably his last assault on the world’s mile record to-day, for Archie San Romani, a young Kansas college student, won the event handily, five yards ahead of the great New Zealand runner and fifteen yards in front of Glen Cunningham. Lovelock was in the lead at half-way and appeared to be a sure winner, but suddenly San Romani spurted and gained a yard lead. Near the finish, Lovelock made an attempt at his famous final sprint, but San Romani’s sprint was stronger. He gained four yards in the last 200 . San Romani's time was four minutes nine seconds.
