The Smuggler was destroyed after crashing at the second fence in the Grand National Hurdle Race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday and breaking his back. Journet also fell and the rider E. Deslandes suffered a broken collarbone.—(P.A.) Speaking at the Rotary Club luncheon yesterday, Mr. N. C. C. Shepherd, Secretary of the Wairarapa Automobile Association, stated that the annual conference of the North Island Motor Union would be held at Carterton next week. There would be 30 or 40 delegates present. The venue of the conference was changed year and it had last been held in Carterton in 1924. A member: "At that rate it might get round to Masterton one of these days?” Mr. Shepherd: "Carterton has its advantages for such a gathering, just as Masterton has advantages in other directions.” (Laughter). Mr. W. H. Wilton and family, Taratahi, elsewhere insert thanks’ notice. Children’s fancy dress party, to be followed by a dance, will be held in Langdale Hall on Tuesday, September 1 at 7.30 o’clock. Arrangements are in •the hands of an energetic committee, and the function promises to be a great Success.
