PRIZE-WINNING BABIES.
PLUNKET SOCIETY’ CONTEST CONCLUDED. GROSS TAKINGS BEACH £275. KEEN RIVALRY AT FINISH. Particularly keen rivalry marked the closing stages yesterday afternoon of the Masterton Blanket Society’s Beautiful Baby Photographic Competition, the gross proceeds of which are in the vicinity of £275. The committee regards the result as most gratifying and is deeply indebted to the many well-wishers who battled so strenuously in the interests of the competitors and especially to Masterton photographers who went to a great deal of expense and did an immense amount of work in photographing the contestants, producing some very charming por- . traits. The contest was run by a ladies’ committee under the direction of Mrs H. H. Daniell, who worked indefatigably to ensure its success. For an hour or so before closing time a most animated scene was witnessed at the voting boxes, as the parents, grandparents, and other relatives watched the progress of the contest and in many instances came to light with substantial donations to the society ’s funds. Some idea of the keenness of the rivalry may be gathered from the fact that £125 was received yesterday in votes. In this connection the society is greatly indebted to the sponsors of the second, third and fourth place competitors in the various classes, whose efforts to enhance the chances of success of their respective entrants were a big factor in swelling the gross takings on the closing day. As the expenses should not exceed £l4 something over £260 net should be added to the society’s funds. The takings average out at 17s 9d each for the 310 photographs entered in the competition.
