SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. MARTINBOBOUGH. (“The Age”’Special.) Mrs. W. H. Martin and her son,. John, returned last week from a visit to Wairoa. The Women’s Institute and the Home and School Association have donated native shrubs to be planted at the school on Arbor Day. Mrs. A. Morrison has returned from a visit to Rotorua. On Tuesday afternoon members of St. Andrew’s Guild held a- gift afternoon for Miss C. Evans. Mrs. Ball, acted as hostess and wished the guest of honour all future happiness. Mr. Ball and Miss Dymes, hon. secretary of the guild, also gave short addresses. Miss Evans replied, thanking those present for their gifts and good wishes. An amusing competition was won , by Mrs. McFern.

The Town Hall was beautifully decorated for the Returned Soldiers r dance held on Tuesday night. Though the attendance was somewhat disappointing a most enjoyable evening was spent. A ladies’ committee was in charge of the supper arrangements and Te Tau’s Orchestra was responsible for the music. The Women’s Institute meeting was held in the Presbyterian Hall* on Thursday last, Mrs. Tyler presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs. John McLeod’ demonstrated wool rug making and daisy knitting, while Miss McArdle demonstrated silver pewter work, both ladies being accorded a vote of thanks. The competition for the best laundered table cloth was won by Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Tyler being second and Mrs. Cuthbert third. The Mayoress, Mrs. W. B. Martin, spoke on the shilling appeal for Queen Mary’s portrait for the National Art Gallery. The meeting closed with community singing and the National Ab- ’ them. TE WHABAU. (“The Age” Special) A match between teams of the Te Wharau Golf Club picked by the president, Mr. J. Bannister, and the secretary, Mr. F. C. H, Cotter, was played on Saturday afternoon. Some very good golf was seen, the contest finishing all square. A team visited the Wainuioru links* during the week-end and tried conclusions with a team from the local chib.. After a keen game the result was all square. During the week several matches were played here for the Nimmo Cup, Handyside Cup and the Silver Buttons. The holder of the Nimmo Cup, N. Kummer defeated E. Nitz, and Miss Lucas holder of the Handyside Cup defeated Mrs Schofield and Mrs Bead. The holders of the silver buttons, Miss N. Taylor and N. Kummer withstood a challenge from Mrs Fbreman and 8. Gray, retaining the buttons by 2 and 1. Next Saturday a mixed foursome will be played. The following is the draw: A. McGregor and Miss Lucas v» H. Paku and Mrs R. Bannister; J. Bannister and Mrs Nitz v. F. Cotter and Miss Vennell; P. Kummer and Mrs Foreman v. R. Bannister and Mrs Kummer; I. McGregor and Miss Buckeridge v. R. Vennell and Miss N. Taylor; N. Kummer and Mrs McGregor v. C. Scho-• field and Miss M. Taylor; W. Kummer and Mrs Cobb v. F. McKinstry and Mrs Read; N. Foreman and Mrs Douglas v. K. Ellis and Mrs Schofield; R Nitz and Mrs McKinstry v. R. McKinstry and Mrs J. Bannister. A dance will be held in the hall on Saturday evening when members of the golf club will farewell Mr. F. Dyer who is leaving the district, having been transferred to Clyde Quay School in Wellington.
