POOR SHOOTING.
FRENCH SUBMARINE BOMBARDS SHORE. IN TRYING TO SINK BURNING YACHT. LONDON, July 19. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” states that thousands of holi-day-makers at the seaside resort of Saint Tropez, near Cannes, interestedly watching the French submarine Atalante attempting to sink the blazing yacht Hippocampe, fled in panic when shells began to land among them. The Hippocampe, laden with four tons of petrol, had caught fire, and was menacing harbour craft. The Atalante, responding to appeals by the owners, tried to tow her to the open sea, but she broke loose, whereupon the Atalante attempted to sink her. The first shot from a 75-millimetre gun landed near .the gendarmerie ashore, the second severed an electric cable and damaged a sawmill) and the third fell on the beach. The yacht was not scuppered until the eighteenth shot. The Minister of Marine has ordered an inquiry immediately the Atalante reaches port.
