PENALTY ON RATES.

POWER TO REMIT PENALTY WELLINGTON, July 20. The usual power for local bodies to remit 10 per cent, penalty on rates under special circumstances will continue to be granted by the Government this year, according to an announcement made to-day by the Minister or Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. The Minaster said a clause in the Finance Bill to be introduced in the House of Representatives on Wednesday provided that the penalty, as usual, could be remitted at the option of the local body concerned.—(P.A.)
