JAPANESE REBELS.
SEVENTEEN SENTENCED TO DEATH. FIVE OTHERS IMPRISONED FOR LIFE. TOKIO, July 6. Sixteen army officers and a civilian were sentenced to death, and five officers to imprisonment for life for complicity in the rebellion on February 26, in which a military coup was attempted in which several politicians were assassinated. The court-martial issued a statement expressing some sympathy for the rebels, but declaring that an effort forcefully to change policy in a reactionary direction was intolerable.
The court-martial convicted 123 out of 1353 accused, two of whom committed suicide. The remainder were exonerated. Six civilians were sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from 10 to 15 years. The sentences on noncommissioned officers range from 15 years to 1} years. Those sentenced to death include two captains and eleven lieutenants.
The sentences were promulgated in a document of 22,000 words following g lengthy trial in camera.
