BURNING HEAT.
ON GREAT AMERICAN PLAINS. TEMPERATURES ALMOST TOUCH RECORD. BAD OUTLOOK FOR GRAIN CROPS. CHICAGO, July 6. A fresh heat wave increased the damage and suffering in the Great Plains drought area to-day, when temperatures which almost constitute a record were recorded from Kentucky to the Rocky Mountains. In North Dakota HOdeg. Fahr, were registered, while numerous places in Montana, Nebraska, and lowa reported between 100 and 108 degrees. Grain growers had hung their hopes on shower predictions throughout the area, but these,, while they were fulfilled in some places, were nowhere of any consequence. Meteorological predictions now indicate a widening of the high temperature area, with no immediate relief in sight. The Catholic Bishop of Nebraska has ordered prayers for rain and special masses to be held to-day throughout the State. Navajo Indians in Arizona went through rain-making ritual. Prices of grain rose to a limit of five in the wheat pit to-day, and stayed there despite much profit-taking.
