LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Wairarapa Wrestling Association has been allotted the North Island amateur wrestling championships, which will be held at Masterton. on September 7 and 8. A table tennis contest, played last night between the Te Ore Ore and Masterton Winter Sports Club, resulted in an easy win for the latter by 24 matches to nil, or 48 sets to 9.

A dance will be held in the Municipal Hall* on Saturday by tho Masterton Harrier Club. The music will be supplied by the Blue River Dance Band and the visiting harriers from Wanganui will be the guests of honour.

An organisation of undertakers, the Auckland Provincial Funeral Directors’ Association has been formed. The association is still in its early stages, but a meeting is to be called shortly to consider policy matters, a member stated. A young English stallion, Foxlight, by the Ascot Gold Cup winner, Foxlaw, will arrive in Wellington on Sunday by the Northumberland, having been purchased for Mr. J. Mulvaney, of Masterton, by Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd. He will remain at Trentham for some weeks after his arrival. Foxlaw, his sire, proved highly successful at the stud in England, his progeny including two Ascot Gold Cup winners. Foxlight should be a valuable addition to the list of imported sires in New Zealand.

The rapidity with which noxious weeds such as variegated thistle and ragwort were spreading in Hawke’s Bay is alarming farmers, states a Press Association telegram from Waipukurau. All county councils except Wairoa were represented at a conference at Waipukurau yesterday to z consider means of checking the menace. It was decided to recommend that rabbit inspectors should undertake to report cases of neglect, the Department of Agriculture to take action against the property owners concerned, also that the Government subsidise rabbit boards for the extra cost.-—(P.A.) A very satisfactory report was presented at the anmlal meeting of the Wairarapa Permanent Investment and Loan Association, held at Greytown on Monday. The result of the year’s operations enabled five per cent, interest to be credited to shareholders on their capital, plus a bonus on shares of three years’ duration and over. Messrs D. P. Loasby and H. G. Williams were re-elected to the directorate, and Messrs Mark Maxton and A. L. Webster were re-elected auditors at the same remuneration as last year.
