Mr. J. H. Foreman will be a candidate for .the Taueru Riding at the Masterton County by-election. There were five bankruptcies recorded in Wairarapa last month. The total for the half year ended June 30 is 9.
Owing to unforseen circumstances, the Masterton Swimming Club's second dance, which was to have been held on July 18, has been postponed until August 1.
During draining operations at Forest Downs, Mangamahoe, recently, a tiaha, in a good state of preservation, was unearthed about two feet from the surface of the ground. This interesting relic of the early days is now in the possession of Miss E. Heckler.
The Otago Retail Fruiterers' Association has decided to urge the Government to lift the embargo on Australian fruit in order to make available the cheat) supplies which are on the Australian markpt.—(P.A.) Patrons of the Regent Theatre are reminded that the first screening of Charlie Chaplin in ‘ * Modern Times’' will be made to-morrow night at a special late session, starting at 10.15 o 'clock.
A total of 641 drivers’ licences were issued by the Masterton Borough Council during June, which brings the total for this licensing year to 1560. The Masterton County Council issued 341 for the month, bringing its total to 999.
The Self-Help shop, No. 13 High Street, Lower Hutt, was entered by thieves, and goods, valued at between £2O and £3O, consisting mostly of tobacco and cigarettes, were stolen. Entrance was effected by boring through the floorboards.—(PA.) The Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) announced yesterday that Mr. G. A. Lewin, Town Clerk of Dunedin, had been appointed as the fourth director of the State Advances Corporation Board. Mr. Lewin was a member of the old Mortgage Corporation Board, and is a member of the Local Bodies Loans Board.—<(P.A.)
The resignation of the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) was accepted with regret at yesterday's meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. It was decided to place on record the board's appreciation of Mr. Armstrong's services to the public and the board during the past fifteen years. “(PA.) A young man named Lewis Edward Hubbard, who resides in Tararua Street, was knocked by a car when cycling along Dixon Street at 5.15 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He suffered a bad cut on one of his knees and after being attended to by Dr. Archer Hoskihg was taken to his home. His bicycle wks badly smashed.
The rainfall recorded at Te Wharau in June, according to Mr. F. C. H. Cotter, totalled 4.84 inches, as compared with 4.56 inches in. l ' June last year. Rain fell on eleven days, the maximum being 2.48 inches on June 16. For the first six months of this year the total rainfall is 33.82 inches, as compared with 27.01 inches up to June 30, 1935. The total value of building permits issued by the Masterton Borough Council during June was £8409, which is over twice the amount for the corresponding month last year, when the value was £3689. There were seven dwellings included in the fifteen permits issued. The figures for Masterton County also show an improvement over June of last year. This June three permits were issued valued at £1125 as against two permits'to the value of £775 in June last yet Ur.
An inquest was opeped at Palmerston North yesterday into the death of. Irene Merle Campbell, aged 16, of Awahuri, who was killed shortly after midnight on April 17 ( when a motor cycle allegedly carrying three men ran into a party of four people returning from a dance. In conjunction witft the inquest a charge is being heard against William Richard Paul, aged 21, factory hand, of recklessly or negligently driving a motor cycle thereby causing the death of Miss Campbell. There are 21 witnesses to be heard.—(P.A.)
The fatal motor accident on the Hutt Road early on the morning of June 21. as a result of which Owen David Phaup lost his life, was described to the Wellington Coroner, Mr. E. Gilbertson, in the course of an inquest yesterday. The Coroner found that an involuntary movement of the driver's arm when he looked at the speedometer had caused a deviation of the car to the left, as a result of which the car struck a telegraph post, the deceased being fatally injured by being thrown violently' on the roadway. “(PA.)
