The “Daily Mailrs" cricket writer says: “He is obviously a player who is ripening for the highest class of batsmanship. Gimblett has asserted a definite right to a place in Etigland’s team. Credit is also due to Turnbull's grit and skill, but otherwise England's victory did not prove much by giving reason for complacency. There is no need to worry overmuch about the batting,, but I trust the selectors will not dream of taking the field in the second Test with only one bowler exceeding slow-medium pace. Nobody can reasonably complain of Allen’s captaincy, but there are misgivings as to whether a fast bowler should lead the team for Australia." “The Times" said: “As a captain Allen came out triumphantly. He bowled fast and kept his side working. If there is anybody except Duckworth and Leyland who must always play for England it is Gimblett. He is a splendid opening batsman, who is a run-maker on any type of wicket."
