TRAGEDY IN CELL.

MAN FOUND STRANGLED.

TIMARU, June 18. The cell of the Timaru Police Station was the scene of a tragedy shortly before 7.30 o’clock this morning, when a man, held on a charge of theft, strangled himself with the aid of a towel and bedclothes. The victim was Joseph Owen Green, 26, unemployed, who came before the court yesterday, chatged with stealing £2. Bail was allowed but the accused was unable to find a surety of £5O and remained in custody. A constable looked in the cell early this morning and saw Green lying apparently asleep. He went back later to clean up and on going to rouse Green found him with the blankets over his head and his face buried m the pillow. A towel was found tied round his neck and drawn tight at the back. The deceased is believed to be a native of Gore.—(P.A.)
