HATCH COVERS FOUND.

DISCOVERY NEAR PORANGAHAU ON SUNDAY. SAILING SHIP SIGHTED ON MAY 28. WAS IT THE JOSEPH CONRAD! NAPIER, June 8. It is reported from Porangahau that a full-rigged ship, believed to be the Joseph Conrad, was sighted off the coast on May 28. A search, party which went along the beach yesterday discovered three hatch covers, each nine feet square. Distress signals were reported in the neighbourhood on June 1, haring been seen by the steamer Kartigi and also from the shore. A terrible sea was running at that time. It is stated that according to experts, the hatch covers washed ashore came from an 18ft. hatch. The hatches had iron grips. A number of planks measuring 14ft. also came ashore at Makaramo, near Porangahau, but it is believed that these planks are very old. A further search is being made on part of the beach, which is accessible only at low tide. It was in this vicinity that the Mizpah was lost some years ago.—(P.A.)
