“THE THIRD STEP.”
STATE ADVANCES CORPORATION BILL. “MEASURE NOT FAR ASTRAY. 0 (By Telegraph—“ The Age" Special.) WELLINGTON, May 28. The third of what the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, described as the three steps of the Government, was taken by the introduction of the State Advances Corporation Bill, the second reading of w'hich he moved in the House of Representatives to-night. The other three steps, he said, were, first, taking control of credit and the monetary system and then, secondly, putting the farmer in a position so that’, if he worked his land, he would be assured of some reasonable return while workers would be provided with necessary houses, because it Was only a house which made a home possible. The Opposition attitude, as first expressed by the Hon. A. Hamilton, the former Minister of Labour, was one of cautious approval. “I am not going to say,” he declared, “we are opposed to the Bill. From our viewpoint it is not far astray, although we believe the present system is better.” The debate was not concluded when the House rose. Earlier in the proceedings it had put through the Committee and final stage the Shops and Offices Bill.
