BURNED TO DEATH.
OCCUPANT OF WHARE NEAR WAIROA. FLAMES PREVENT RESCUE. WAIROA, May 18. Smashing down the door of a blazing whare in the Public Works yard at about 6.30 o’clock on Saturday morning two North Clyde residents were horrified to see through the flames the form of a man on a mattress on the floor. Efforts were made by one man to enter the building but he was forced back by the flames and intense heat. The building was burnt to the ground and a search by the police among the debris resulted in the finding of the charred remains of Arthur Noffke, alias Arthur Weir, aged about 60, who had been living in the whare for only a few days. The fire was first discovered by Mr. W. Harnett and Mr. A. E. Pettit, occupiers of residences nearby and it was Mr. Pettit who attempted fo enter the whare to rescue the man. An inquest was held yesterday by Mr. V. E. Winter, District Coroner, who found that Noffke was burned to death but that there was nothing to show- how the fire started.—(P.A.)
