HELPLESS CRIPPLE.

SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT. ON CHARGE OF BIGAMY. CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. Joseph Halford, a helpless cripple, who was carried into Court in a chair was to-day sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by Mr. Justice Northcroft on a charge of bigamy. His Honour said that there were no mitigating Circumstances. The files showed that two years after Halford’s bigamous marriage in New Zealand he had written affectionate letters to his wife in England. "The crime is a serious one,” said his Honour, “and a proper deterrent is necessary. It appears that both you and your second wife have been living on charity. In all the circumstances, I consider it my duty to sentence you to a term of imprisonment.” -(P-A.)
