ZANZIBAR RIOTING.

I NO POLITICAL IMPORT. STATEMENT IN COMMONS. RUGBY, February 12. The Colonial Secretary (Mr. J. H. Thomas) made a statement in the House of Commons during a question on the recent rioting in Zanzibar in which he expressed deep regret at the deaths of the Acting Resident Commissioner (Mr. I. H. Rolleston) and the Indian police inspector, who were injured by the mob. Mr. Thomas said that the rioting broke out on the morning of February 7. The cause was still uncertain, but appeared to be some dispute which had arisen in connection with the inspection of copra and the strict enforcement of the regulations against adulteration. On the information at present before him he saw no reason to attach any political significance to the regrettable incident.— (British Official Wireless).
