ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD.

CANVASSER FOUND GUILTY. CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. William Alexander Welsh, a canvasser, 25, was found guilty in the Supreme Court to-day on' a chsCrge of attempting to obtain £6O from William Leslie Baker and his wife by fraud. A son of William Leslie Baker was arrested and later convicted on his plea of guilty of having stolen money from the Post Office, at which he was employed. Welsh went to Mrs. Baker while her son was under arrest and told her that additional defalcations by her' son had been discovered) and that unless the amount M £6O was paid in a few days her son might be given a long term of imprisonment, Welsh said the information hq<J been given to him by a friend in the Postal service who had been investigating the thefts. The Bakers, after some delay, informed the police. Welsh refused to divulge the name of his friend in the Post Office who, he said, would attend to the restoration of the money.—(P.A.)
