A Press Association telegram from Blenheim reports the death yesterday afternoon, after a long illness, of Mrs. J. F. Bennett, wife of Dr. J. F. Bennett, of Blenheim. , Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Clarke, of Whakatane, who have been visiting their daughter, Mrs. Neville Ross, Lansdowne, returned to the Bay of Plenty by car on Saturday morning. They were accompanied by their youngest daughter, Miss Phyllis Clarke, who was taken seriously ill on Christmas Day. Miss Clarke will be spending the first part of a long convalescence at Russell, Bay of Islands. A delightful afternoon was held on Saturday at "Okoroire,” Martinborough, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. George Pain, the occasion being to celebrate Mr. Pain’s ninetieth birthday. Afternoon tea was served in the drawing roum which was tastefully decorated with pink and blue hydrangeas. Mr. Pain was the recipient of many congratulations from his friends, and also received many congratulatory telegrams. Many of the older residents of the Wairarapa were present and spent the time in happy conversation and reminiscences of the early days. Opportunity was taken by the visitors toview the beautiful grounds. Many a hearty handshake sealed a most pleasant afternoon.
