A tragedy occurred at Scottsboro, involving the burning to death of twenty negroes. Twentytwo Negro convicts were being transported in a motor lorry. A .cage was used for the transfer of the prisoners from a prison road eamp to stone crushing pits.- A drum of petrol was also being carried and the fluid splashed over as the lorry hit an icy portion of the road. The convicts were bending over a bundle of burning papers, which one of, their number had ignited in order to warm his hands. When the stream of petrol washed over the flame it made the interior of the cage a roaring furnace. The guards succeeded in pulling two Negroes out but they were so badly injured that even these are not expected to live.
