PORTION OF TE ABO -BATHS SWEPT AWAY. STEAMER JOHN ASHORE. WELLINGTON, February 2. The gale continues to rage. This morning part of the Te Aro Baths was swept away. There is much damage to fences, gardens and hoardings. There is no telegraphic communication with the remainder of the North Island. A train is reported to be derailed near Shannon and several passengers injured. The steamer John, 339 tons, laid up at anchor off Kaiwarra broke from her mooring and was driven ashore near Ngahauranga. The ship’s watchman came ashore on a line. The vessel is not being salvaged until the weather abates.
