The death has occurred of Dame Clara Butt, the famous singer, a London cablegram reports.' Sergt. T. H. Dyer is visiting Auckland. During his absence Constable M. Roche is in charge of the Masterton Police Station. Mr. -C. I* Jackson, ef the local Public Trust Office,! has received notice of his transfer to the position of Chief Cashier at the Wellington branch. Mr. Jackson leaves to take up his duties early in February. Mr. W. M. O’Hara, the trans-Tas-man flyer, who was given a public welcome at the Hood Aerodrome yesterday, was the guest of friends in Masterton overnight, and goes on to Hastings by air this morning. The Union Steam Ship Co. has received cabled advice of the death of Sir James Mills, chairman of directors, in London on Thursday. The funeral will take place on Monday. Sir James Mills was born in Wellington in 1847. In 1869-75 he was manager of the Harbour Steamship Company in Dunedin and in 1875 became managing director of the Union Steamship Company, having been chairman since 1906. In 1873-5 he was member for Waikbuaiti iu the Provincial Council, and from 1887 tin 1893 M.H.R. for Port Chalmers. He was knighted in 1907.
