STORMY CONFERENCE.

TRADES UNIONS DISCUSS SEAMEN’S STRIKE. MEETING REJECTS EXTENSION TO KEY INDUSTRIES. PROPOSALS TO BE RECAST (Received Wednesday, 11.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 22. The conference of Federal unions called by the Australian Council of Trades Unions to discuss the seamen’s strike was continued to-day, when the seamen submitted a proposal for the extension of the strike to key industries. This was rejected. The seamen then offered to place the dispute in the hands of the Australian Council of Trades Unions in conjunction with the Seamen’s Union. It was also suggested that the shipowners be approached. The proceedings were very stormy and eventually became so involved that the conference asked the seamen to reconstruct their proposals for a further conference to-morrow. The only support offered the seamen was from Mr. Nelson, president and Mr. Orr, .secretary of the Miners’ Federation.
