HEALTH CAMPS.

DR. T. GRAY’S COMMENDATION. HAWERA, October 2. Decided opinions as to the value of Health camps are held by Dr. T. Gray, Director-General of Mental Hospitals. In reply to a. letter sent to him by the hon. organiser of the Health Stamp Campaign (Mr. L. Oi Hooker j, Dr. Gray wrote: “ 'Accuse not nature. She hath done her part. Do thou but thine,' is our direction from one of the wisest men, of all times. What then is our part in so far as concerns the health of our country! Nature has done her part. Are we doing ours! The answer is to be found in our hospitals, sanatoria, mental hospitals and prisons, .to all of which wo point as evidence of our civilisation, as betokening our. solicitude - for those broken in body, mind or estate. Away with such vain imaginings. Let us rather hang our heads in shame when we see everywhere around us such monuments to our failure. The lawmakers of Erewljon were not so absurd when they classed illness as a crime, but it is a crime which is largely preventible, and as the Prince of Wales has said, 'if preventible why not prevented?’ Because I believe that in the establishment of Health camps we are getting back' to first principles and concentrat. ing on prevention rather than cure, I wholeheartedly commend the sale of Health stamps to all who appreciate the necessity of building up citizenship on the soundest of foundations, .health.”
