AIR LINER MISSING.

ON BASS STRAIT ROUTE. « INDICATIONS OF SUDDEN DISASTER. FIVE ON BOARD INCLUDING TWO PASSENGERS. (Received Wednesdav, 9.0 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 2. The Holyman Airways new liner Loina, with five men, including two passengers, aboard, which left Melbourne at 8.15 a.m. for Launceston, has disappeared over Bass Strait. A message was received from the aeroplane at 9.51 indicating that‘it was about to land on Flinders Island, but no trace was found there. A later message states that the civil authorities report that wreckage has been sighted, and also a lifebelt, in the vicinity of Long Point on Flinders Island It is believed that the Loina developed engine trouble and came down at sea. PASSENGERS & CREW. AIR FORCE ’PLANES JOIN , IN SEARCH (Received This Day, 0.1 a.m.) MELBOURNE, October 2. The occupants of the missing air liner are Messrs G. S. Anderson, a business man of Sydney; G. Garlick, a Sydney business man; Arthur Norman Evans, aged 34, pilot; Max Brown, 23, co-pilot; E. Best, 28, engineer employed by the Holyman Company. Air Force aeroplanes have now joined in the search for the Loina, which is of the same type as the DH 86, which figured in two major air disasters last year—one over Bass Strait and the other near Longreaeh Queensland. The same type of machine is being used in the Brisbane-Singapore section of the Australia-England service. The Loina is practicality a new machine.
