WOMEN’S DIVISION.

MEETING OF PROVINCIAL COUNCIL. The quarterly meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Council of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Rest Room, Perry Street, last week, Mrs A. Clark (president) in the chair. Other present were:—Mesdames S. Dalgleish, C. C. Jackson (Masterton, D. Andrew, Laird Meredith, J. M. Laing (Tinui), E. Standen, Hart, Renall, Arcus, Hodder, Misses Arcus, Hart, Renall (Carterton); D. Brunton (Mauriceville, Ihurana); L. R. Grant, Ness, Farquahar, W. Ross( Pahautea), D. James (Rangitumau), C. R. Holmes, Burch, Miss Holmes (Martinborough), A. M. Tate, R. Beu (Greytown). Apologies were received from Mesdames Dodsen, Wakely, Ward, Dagg, H. Holmes and Wiggins, Misses Card and Heckler. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs D. Simpson, past Dominion Treasurer, in her recent bereavement; to the relatives of Mr. Hamish Armstrong in his air calamity and hope expressed that he may reach safety, and to Mrs W. H. Jackson in her recent ilness.

Mrs C. C. Jackson gave a report .'n the recent Interprovincial Conference held in Palmerston North, where it was decided- that the conference should be an annual affair, the next conference most probably to be held in .Masterton. The provincial areas concerned were Wanganui, Wairarapa, Wellington Central, Southern Hawke's Bay and Manawatu.

Reports on the work of the Dominion Conference, held in Wellington recently, were made by Mesdames Dalgleish and Groves, delegates. At this conference it was decided to pay the expenses of distant branch delegates (one only for each branch) to the conference, by a smal levy on each branch member and a levy on the Headquarter General Account.

A donation of £3 is being sent to the Cowdray Assistance Fund, which is being operated upon by the Mayor of Feilding, and Mr. Lloyd Hammond, president of the Wellington Executive of the Farmers Union. It was resolved to forward a letter of congratulation to Mrs C. K. Wilson on her becoming Dominion President. The secretary (Mrs C. C. Jackson) reported on the Housekeeping work in the Wairarapa. Twenty-four positions were filled by housekeepers during June and July, one position by a nurse and one by a sewing woman. There were ten housekeepers at present working in the province. All but two, were for cases of sickness. The nurse, Mrs Bryant, was given leave of absence owing to severe illness in her own family.

MASTERTON BRANCH.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton branch of the Women’s Division was held last week. Those present were: Mesdames A. Donald, who took the chair in the absence of the president (Mrs H. Holmes), A. C. Gawith, 8. Dagleish, K. Groves, A. lorns, I. McLean, W. James, C. Burling, A. Ross, K. Stewart, D. Cameron, G. Reynolds, Rutherford, Doyle, C. C. Jackson and Miss Evans.

Five new members were enrolled: Mesdames A. lorns, Brockett, Misses Gawith, lorns and Evans. Motion of sympathy were passed similar to those passed by the Provincial Council.

In the absence of the secretary, Mrs. W. P. Carter, Mrs. C. C. Jackson undertook her duties.

Mrs. Brockett, responding to an invitation, spoke briefly on the possibility of establishing a Book Club for those in the outlying districts at a small cost. She knew a qualified librarian who would be willing to undertake the work. After some discussion, a small committee consisting of Mesdames Holmes, Renall, Brockett, A. lorns, A. Donald, and C. C. Jackson was set up to go into the matter and report to next meeting. It was resolved that hostesses for lhe afternoon be appointed ahead and be responsible for the entertainment. For September Mesdames Gawith, McLean, and G'roves were appointed and they are asking Mr. W. H. Booth to speak on “Rose Pruning” and on “Daffodils.” For October Mesdames James, C. C. Jackson, Miss Evans were appointed. Mrs. H. D. Bennett is to be invited to "speak on “Maori Lore and Handcraft.” An informal discussion took place on the formation of a craft class- for junior members. It was decided to form a class and all wishing to join are asked to send their names in to Mrs. C. C. Jackson. On payment of one shilling applicants become members of a junior branch and these members will choose the place and time of meeting. Mrs. Brockett has kindly offered her services as instructress in any branch of handcraft suggested to her. Already some members have joined up. Mrs. Brockett was warmly thanked for her generous offer. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Renall, Dalgleish and Groves.
