THE ODD TRICK
MAORIS DECISIVELY BEAT NEW SOUTH WALES. IN CONCLUDING FIXTUBE OF TOUR. MATCH WITNESSED BY BIG CROWD. (Received Sunday, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. Before an ecstatic crowd of 20,993, including Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven (State Governor), Mr. B. S. Stevens (Premier of New South Wales) and Mr. G. W. Forbes (Premier of New Zealand), the Maoris decisively won their third match against New South Wales, the concluding fixture of the four, by 14 points to 5, bringing the record for the tour to eight wins and two losses—24s points for and 132 against. From the start the Maoris attacked with the utmost fervour and raided the home twenty-five repeatedly, but they lost chances through poor handling at critical moments. Once Cooper crossed the line, but the referee ruled that G. Harrison’s pass was offside. Twice the Maoris were penalised for offside play five yards from the line. Nepia missed two attempts at field goals. New South Wales were penalised for an offence in a scrum five yards out and Nepia kicked a goal. Towards the end of the first half K. Reedy injured a knee and was replaced by Kershaw.
In the second spell, following a ruck at the Maori twenty-five, Nepia bumping and fending his way at top speed, gained fifty yards along the touchline, outpacing White. From a ruck following Storey’s tackle, the ball went across to C. Smith, who scored. Nepia converted. Later Nepia kicked a penalty goal and McDonald scored a try.
